Backs and bikes and clubs

Wow, long time no update. Since my last entry I have joined a running club, and had a few personal training sessions over the summer. I went to the gym less and did more exercise outside of the gym. I returned to weight training after a break of a few weeks and injured my lower back whilst lifting the same amount of weight as I had weeks before... felt stupid afterwards! I should lift less weight after an extended break, this is something I find difficult to remember as I don't often have extended breaks from lifting. Read more... )

This week

Monday: 45 minutes weight training. 1¼ mile walk carrying 20 pounds of shopping. I normally get the bus home from Camden, but I have decided to walk home whenever possible.
Tuesday: 45 minutes exercise bike.
Wednesday: 50 minutes jog, w00t! Furthest I've ever jogged on my own.
Thursday: Rest day. 2 miles of walking including lots of steps.
Friday: 45 minutes weight training. I did my warm-up jog to the gym which is a mile away at 6mph :D
Saturday: 30 minutes interval training, 20 mins extra exercise biking, 2 mile walk, 20 minutes dancing with the goths.
Sunday: 35 minutes interval training at the gym. 3½-4 miles walking throughout the day.

Hm, I was going to try and get a long walk in this week but I did other things instead. I really want to go for a walking holiday before summer, so I shall try and up my miles when I'm away at Whitby (Yorkshire seaside town) this week. Very good exercise week overall.

Last couple of weeks

I've had a slow couple of weeks exercise-wise. I've been pushing myself too hard in other areas, and have not had enough sleep. I've booked a couple of exercise classes for this week, and will be prioritising rest and exercise over other things. I'll be doing my first circuit training class today, and have a spinning class booked for tomorrow.

The livejournal community 100pounds2lose has recently started a weekly exercise roundup, which I've found really helpful. I'll copy/paste what I wrote there. Read more... )

I'm going to aim to write a weekly entry here.

I've not posted in ages. Been keeping up the exercise when I've been well enough to (I've just recovered from a bad stomach bug).

I ordered a folding exercise bike that was reduced. It'll be good for days when I'm too anxious to exercise outside.

Long time, no update

I injured my back in late 2009 (Nov or Dec). It was a stupid injury; I was deadlifting quite a small weight (20kg) and was thinking of something else. Because I was thinking of something else, I didn't engage my abdominal muscles as I lifted, and something in my lower back went ****.

I rested for a few weeks to the extent that I either had help with shopping or I just bought a few items at a time. I couldn't walk for longer than half an hour without pain. Now my back is a lot better, and I've been going to the gym for a week or two.

I had an inactive weekend (exercise-wise) apart from a 3 mile walk in the rain. Mm, rain.

Monday I was still pretty tired from being out late on Saturday night, but I managed to walk a couple of hours.

Tuesday (today) I jogged from Whitfield Gardens to home which was 0.8 mile/1.3km in 10mins 38secs, did 11 minutes of stair climbing (including going down for half of the time) then did 10 minutes more jogging. I was going to use the outdoor cross-trainer/eliptical that is located in the local small park, but it is *rubbish*. It has no resistance, so if you don't go really really fast, it's a bit pointless... and if you go fast your feet keep falling off the slippy pedals so it's annoying.

Tomorrow I hope to get an upper-body workout in the afternoon before weigh-in.

Update

It's been over a month since I last posted. I was ill for a little while (mild cold immediately followed by heavy cold/mild flu), so no exercising for a while.

I've been exercising for the last 2-3 weeks. My body is a bit crap after the flu(?), and I've had to make allowances. I want to be at/beyond the level I was at in October, dammit! I can be patient and realistic though. It doesn't help that I've been sleeping really badly due to generalised anxiety for the last few weeks.Read more... )

Perfect

I went to the gym today to do some leg work with a bit of upper body stuff. I did some barbell squats, and I was unsure of my form. I asked the gym worker to check it, and he said 'that's perfect, as good as it gets'. Woo!

I've been exercising every day sine Monday. Monday was the second session of my weight-lifting class, which meant that I only did a little light exercise on Tuesday. I was hurting much less than the week before though. Wednesday I did 50 minutes of serious cardio. Got lovely and sweaty. Did some ab-work afterwards. Thursday I walked from Chingford to Walthamstow.

All good stuff :-)

Running around

I haven't been doing much 'proper' exercise lately. I have been rushing around London being very busy. This has meant I have exercised :-)

I went to my first Olympic-style weightlifting class on Monday, and the bruises from that have put me off running. I wrote about that on my other journal... will copy/paste here for my reference. Read more... )

Today I finally made it back to the gym. I had a bit of a warm-up then I did a full upper-body workout. I was going to do 30 minutes of cardio after that, but my body screamed 'no' and I listened to it :D I treated myself to a bit tray of sushi and a rice/red bean paste cake thing. Mmmm.

Period of inactivity ended

I had a bit of time away from the gym because of BiCon comedown.

I've been gymming three days in a row now though, which I'm pleased about.

I really like how I can sculpt my body with diet and exercise. It's great! I'm looking forward to my weightlifting class. One week away, yikes!

It's taken me a while to get back into going to the gym. BiCon really wiped me out. I have been doing a bit of jogging and quite a lot of walking though.

Tuesday:

Jogged to gym.
Upper body workout (back and chest).
Walked home. Walked to Holborn and back, then walked to Fitzrovia and back. Total walking: 5 miles.

Wednesday:

Booked weightlifting/powerlifting course.
Walked around Bloomsbury, walked home.
Walked to Camden Town via the canal/Kentish Town.
30 minutes HIIT on the exercise bike.
(Ate too much food, bah.)

Today: vague plans for exercise. Need more concrete ones! I have work later, so I don't want to do something that uses my wrists too much. Maybe a longish jog?

Every day I get stronger and fitter

Wednesday I had a quick cardio session at the gym in Camden Town. 40 minutes of exercise biking. Dripping with sweat was I :-D

Thursday I went to the gym at Oasis and did a back/chest workout. I managed to up the weights for flyes to 12kg dumbbells. Low reps facilitated this. Did a bit of dead-lifting of a barbell of 35kg. I'm going to have to speak to a gym worker about DLing more than 40kg; I don't think that would fit on the free barbell, and I want to avoid using the Smith Machine. Maybe switch to dummbells? There are some crazily heavy dumbbells at Oasis.

Today I plan to jog 3.2 miles again, this time on my own. I'll walk to Mile End after volunteering near Old Street, then jog to Angel again. Maybe I'll improve my 44 minutes time! (That's if I remember to look at my stopwatch when I am out of breath with adrenaline pumping.)

Last few days and pushing myself

Sunday I had dance class followed by a bit of a mixed session of lower and upper body work at the gym. I did quite well at the dance class, recovering from mistakes quickly because of my 'mistakes help me learn and grow' affirmation.

Monday I had a bit of a heavy day at work with dust and boxes, so had a sort of rest day.

Tuesday I went for my furthest jog so far with [livejournal.com profile] doubtfulace. 3.2 miles! Jogged from mid-way through Mile End Park to Angel along the canal. It took 44 minutes. I am *so* pleased with myself.

Crazily active day

Friday:

Jogged the mile to the gym, then a quick 45 min session. Squats and walking lunges with 2 * 14kg dumbbells. Tricep pushback with 4kg (increased weight this time). Tricep overhead extension with 3kg. Time on the exercise bike.

Jogged from Old Street to King's Cross via Regent's Canal: 2.1 miles.

Danced for 2 hours at night.

Woah! Today I am going to have a quiet day in, do a bit of housework and maybe wander out for a bit but no exercise. Knackered.

Quick update

Went to the gym today after work, partly because I was about to have a vegan ice-cream date! (In the end, I ate most of the ice cream.)

Reclining exercise bike: 5 mins warm-up, 35 mins intervals.

Abdominal work: skissor kicks (big and small), leg raises (big and small); opposite elbow to knee thing, crunches focusing on one side then the other, crossing my leg at the knee and using that as a focus point (there's got to be a quicker way of describing that, right?)

Exercise bike: 10 minutes.

Walked home from Camden Town to King's Cross via Somerstown (I usually go down St Pancras Way/between St Pancras and the British Library).

Running around, picking things up and putting them down

Mm, I'm sleepy.

I jogged half a mile to the gym. What I did at the gym )

Today I walked King's Cross to Camden Town, Camden Town to Kentish Town. Jogged back to Camden, and then walked back home to King's Cross again via Camden Town Sainsbury's. Not much walking, but no twinges, so yay!

I wrote a piece about motivation/fitness/starting CT5K for a friend, and gave her a print-out of that along with a print-out of the CT5K program. She has no computer at home. She texted me to thank me, and to say that she'd just been for a jog/walk thanks to my motivation :D

Dance dance dance dance dance to the radio

Friday I jogged to the gym and did an upper-body workout (chest/back). I went in the morning, and there was hardly anyone there. It was good!

Saturday was a rest day; I can't really include the dancing I did at Vagabonds as exercise. It was mostly of the shoe-gazing variety.

This early afternoon I went to the hip dance moves class. I only made it to half an hour before my negative head kicked in. Ho hum. I'm going to go to a few more classes before I try anything else.

Gym todayRead more... )

Need to do more cardio! I'm thinking of starting most/some days with a swim, will see how that goes. Also, need to step up the running... but I can't do everything at once!
